Reasons to Love Winter RVing as a Family

By: Dom Carson

Winter RVing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning family trips, but it offers unique experiences and unforgettable memories. Whether you're exploring snow-covered forests, visiting less-crowded national parks, or cozying up for a movie night in your RV, winter adventures can be truly special. Here are some reasons we love winter RVing as a family. I have also included some practical tips to make it enjoyable and successful when you and your family head out!

1. Escape the Crowds

One of the biggest perks of winter RVing is the solitude. Popular campgrounds and destinations are often quieter during the colder months, allowing your family to experience it in a whole different way. We love heading out to Banff National Park in the winter and we are usually one of only a handful of people camping there (as compared to one of hundreds in the summer months).

Tips for Success:

  • Research campgrounds that stay open year-round. Many national and provincial/state parks offer winter camping options, often with fewer amenities, but just check before you go.
  • Reserve a spot near the bathrooms, so that it’s not too long of a walk out in the cold with your kids.
  • Call ahead to confirm availability and ensure the campground has space for your RV.
  • If you prefer boondocking, check websites like Campendium or iOverlander for free open spaces suitable for winter camping.
  • Pay attention to the weather, make sure there won’t be a ton of snow, which can make it hard to haul your trailer or get into boondocking areas (the national parks campgrounds should be plowed and kept snow-free which is why we love visiting them in the winter!).

2. Enjoy Stunning Scenery

To me, nothing beats the beauty of winter—snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes, and frost-tipped forests are just magic. Winter landscapes offer a fresh perspective on familiar places and make for incredible family photos.

Tips for Success:

  • Pack a quality camera or smartphone to capture the beauty of winter and bring a tripod so you can capture the whole fam!
  • Dress in layers to stay comfortable while exploring or snapping pictures.
  • Take Part in Winter Activities for All Ages
  • From sledding and skating to snowshoeing and building snowmen, winter RVing opens the door for so many family-friendly activities. It’s so easy to feel like a kid again in the winter.
