Leave No Trace: Empowering People to Enjoy the Outdoors Responsibly

Elevating every moment outdoors means ensuring the outdoors remains a place for health, happiness and connection for today’s adventurers and future generations. We care deeply about the health and vitality of our planet, and we know our customers share our passion.

That’s why we partnered with Leave No Trace, an environmental non-profit organization that provides innovative education, skills, research and science to help people care for the outdoors.

The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace offer practices anyone can use to enjoy the outdoors with minimal impact on the environment. We collaborated with Leave No Trace to adapt those principles into first-of-their-kind guidelines to help RVers and boaters protect the outdoors while enjoying all the benefits of our country’s parks, campgrounds, roads and waterways.

“We worked with Leave No Trace to provide specific guidance to our customers on how to tread lightly, interact responsibly with nature, pick sites and be prepared,” said Rusty Callier, senior manager, corporate responsibility for Winnebago Industries. “The goal is to help users of our products protect the spaces they love while enjoying the freedom, adventure and beauty of the outdoors.”

The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
  2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly
  4. Leave What You Find
  5. Minimize Campfire Impacts
  6. Respect Wildlife
  7. Be Considerate of Others

While the basic principles themselves are similar for both RV users and boaters, each principle comes with detailed guidance uniquely tailored to each audience, with advice on fire awareness, composting, recycling, respecting wildlife and more.

The RV guidelines offer best practices for campgrounds, parks and other outdoor areas, including parking your RV, keeping your pets safe, and driving in and around shared spaces. Guidelines for boat owners help protect waterways and coastal environments, including advice on minimizing disturbance of marine life, preventing the introduction of invasive species into new waters and courteously navigating near residential areas and natural reserves.

“We want to empower our customers with the knowledge to help protect themselves and our shared spaces,” said Stacy Bogart, senior vice president, chief legal officer and corporate responsibility lead at Winnebago Industries. “Partnering with Leave No Trace supports our goals to protect people and the planet by promoting education on how to be good stewards of the outdoors while using our products.”
