How Mechanical Propulsion Design Engineer Callie Gillespie Carries on Chris-Craft’s Legacy of Premium Craftsmanship
As America’s Boatbuilder for 150 years, Chris-Craft has built a reputation for unparalleled craftsmanship. It’s a legacy driven by people who are passionate about creating unforgettable boating experiences and elevating every moment outdoors on the water – people like Callie Gillespie, a mechanical propulsion design engineer for the brand. Callie joined the Chris-Craft team in March 2024, bringing with her a background in mechanical engineering and a passion for purposeful innovation. In under a year, she has made a significant impact while learning and growing in her role.
Working in the marine industry wasn’t originally on Callie’s radar. Born and raised in Ohio, her boating experience growing up was limited to occasional family outings on the lake. After graduating from East Carolina University with a mechanical engineering degree, she began working at a nearby boat company and fell in love with marine recreation. A connection through a former colleague led her to Chris-Craft, where she found the perfect mix of focus, challenge and support for her budding career.
As a mechanical propulsion design engineer, Callie is responsible for designing freshwater, raw water, engine harnessing and ballast systems for Chris-Craft's wake-surf models like the Sportster 25, the 35 Launch GT and the 31 Launch GT. She troubleshoots production issues, tests new engine configurations and even takes the boats out for wake-surf tests.
“One of the biggest perks of the job is getting to wake surf during the day,” Callie says. “It’s physically taxing but incredibly fun. Every time I take a boat out, I’m learning something new.”
A major highlight of her career came when she helped develop the prototype for Chris-Craft's new Sportster 28, a next generation wake-surf model that seamlessly combines classic Chris-Craft design and quality with a modern flair and tailored features for water sports enthusiasts. From designing systems to overseeing production and testing, Callie played a key role in bringing the model to life. Seeing the boat debut at the brand’s annual dealer meeting was a proud moment and a testament to her dedication to furthering Chris-Craft's legacy.
But Callie’s success isn’t just about her technical skills – it’s also about the strong team she’s become a part of.
"I’ve learned a lot, and I'm grateful for the support from my team," she says. "Everyone has been so welcoming, and it’s been great to have such a knowledgeable group behind me. It makes all the difference."
That culture of teamwork and innovation drives Chris-Craft to elevate every moment outdoors. In her role, Callie helps create unforgettable experiences for customers on the water, ensuring they enjoy fun, quality time with family and friends.
We’re excited to watch Callie’s journey unfold and are proud to have her as part of the Winnebago Industries and Chris-Craft teams.
